According to WHO it is observed that most of the nursing homes overprescribing risky antipsychotic drugs, even the patients don’t have schizophrenia or other serious mental illnesses.
 
Most of the patients have Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia where antipsychotic drugs are not approved for that disease. Antipsychotic drugs has a warning stating that “Risk of death in older people with dementia.”
 
It is observed that antipsychotic drugs are often administered without proper consent and handling dementia patients in understaffed facilities.
 
The officials focused on countries which have most  skilled nursing facilities. The officials deals with complaints, publicly available data and interviewing patients.
 
The governments of many countries conducted programs to reduce the use of antipsychotic drugs in nursing homes. Then it seemed to be drop in the use of the drugs, 15 percent of nursing homes lagged in curtailing the use of antipsychotics.
 
According to WHO the governments hasn’t done enough programs to reduce use of the drugs, where it faults governmentfor failing to enforce laws to protect nursing home residents.
 
There was a dramatic decline in the use of antipschotic drugs after the involvement of Health Care Association.
